Citizens' Academy

The Citizens’ Academy program has been suspended due to budget cuts. The public will be notified if and when the program resumes.

The Charleston County Citizens’ Academy provides an opportunity for area residents to learn about Charleston County government. The 12-week course covers services and operations of county government, how they are paid for and by whom, and what issues drive decisions on whether or how to provide them. Informed citizens will foster stronger working relationships between government and the community it serves.

The Academy requires a significant time commitment. The fall 2008 classes will be held on Tuesday afternoons from 2 p.m.– 5p.m., from August 12 to November 3, 2008. An optional all-day field trip also is offered.  Graduation will be held on Thursday evening on November 6, 2008 at a County Council meeting. Participants must commit to attend all sessions.

The class is limited to 35 participants. Minimum age to attend is 18, and participants must be residents of Charleston County. Continuing Education Units from the College of Charleston will be available for those who successfully complete the course.

Applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis through Friday, August 1, 2008. Participants will be notified during the week of August 4th. The first class is Tuesday, August 12, 2008.

There is no fee to attend this course.

Sessions will be taught by elected officials and county staff. Classes will be held in several county facilities, including the Lonnie Hamilton III Public Services Building in North Charleston and Judicial Complex in downtown Charleston. Some classes may include field trips and tours.
