Success Rates and Other Outcome Data

Introduction to Outcome Data

Alcoholism and other drug addictions are chronic illnesses.  Similar to diabetes and hypertension, the achievable goal is not to “cure” the illness but to “manage” it over the course of a lifetime.  Just as a diabetic is taught how to monitor and control his or her blood level, Charleston Center clients learn about the value of Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and other 12-Step Support Groups.  True success in managing a chronic illness such as alcoholism is a lifelong process of behavior change.  Consequently, data from any post-discharge survey can be misleading and must be looked at merely as a snapshot in time.  Outcome data below is not so much a measure of a treatment center’s success as it is a measure of a client’s compliance with clinical recommendations.

It should also be noted that research has shown that a significant similarity in rates of patient compliance with medical or clinical recommendations between addiction, diabetes, and hypertension.
