Charleston County Government May Renew Incinerator Contract
Incinerator company agrees in principle today with County’s proposal to renew contract with significant environmental improvements.
Charleston County Government announces that the contract with Veolia, the operator of the incinerator for municipal solid waste, may soon be renewed. Renewal of the contract would reverse Council’s recent action to stop using the incinerator in 2010, when all municipal solid waste, or household garbage, would go into the Bees Ferry Landfill.
County staff has been working with Veolia officials and are confident that a 20-year contract including significant environmental improvements, such as mercury reductions, will soon be presented to Charleston County Council for consideration and approval.
Officials have come to an agreement in principle, and staff is developing all the necessary technical agreements covering issues such as capital investments and environmental assurances.
Today’s announcement is being made in anticipation of Tuesday’s public meeting regarding the Bees Ferry Landfill.
Charleston County Council will still hold the public meeting planned for West Ashley on Tuesday, April 29, to share information about the Bees Ferry Landfill. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the gymnasium of Rutledge Memorial Church, located at 2014 Bees Ferry Road in West Ashley. This meeting has previously been announced.
For anyone wishing to make comments during the meeting, a sign-up sheet will be available beginning at 6 p.m. at the meeting location.
Staff from Charleston County’s Solid Waste and Recycling Department will give a brief presentation about the Bees Ferry Landfill to include future use of the landfill and height restrictions.
