Public Meeting on Proposed Northside Drive Extension and Future Drive in North Charleston
Public meeting from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8
Charleston County is holding a public meeting from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8, in the R. B. Stall High School cafeteria (7749 Pinehurst Street, North Charleston) to gather comments on proposed plans for new road construction to ease traffic congestion in North Charleston.
The plans call for a new road, Future Drive, to connect Palmetto Commerce Parkway to Highway 78 near I-26.
The extension of Northside Drive toward Ladson Road would intersect with Future Drive.
Those attending the meeting will have an opportunity to make comments, ask questions and review conceptual construction designs for the project.
If constructed, the roadways would be designed to reduce traffic congestion on Ladson Road, Dorchester Road and Ashley Phosphate Road. Future Drive and the extension of Northside Drive would also provide access for future commercial and residential development.
Funding for the road improvements would come from the Transportation Half-Cent Sales Tax.
Charleston County RoadWise is the name of the Charleston County Government’s management program for the construction of roads, highways, resurfacing, paving and drainage projects that are funded by the Transportation Sales Tax.
The Charleston County Transportation Sales Tax referendum was approved by voters in November of 2004. Collection of the Transportation Sales Tax began in May of 2005 and will continue for 25 years or until $1.303 billion is generated for transportation and greenspace related projects and improvements.
