Charleston County Seeks Green Ribbon Committee Applicants
Applications will be accepted through Monday, Sept. 15
At a regular meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 19, Charleston County Council established the make-up of a Charleston County Green Ribbon Committee for the purpose of developing a comprehensive solid waste and environmental sustainability plan.
Citizens who are qualified for the one of the 15 spots on the committee may submit applications through Monday, Sept. 15. Applications will be considered by County Council’s Finance Committee on Thursday, Oct. 2, and by County Council during its regular meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 7.
The Green Ribbon Committee will be tasked with serving as a board of advisors and working with a consulting firm to draft the plan by reviewing and evaluating existing county and municipal environmental and solid waste policies, practices and procedures; gathering input from the public regarding environmental and solid waste issues; and acting as a liaison between municipalities and Charleston County Government for shared environmental sustainability and solid waste concerns.
County Council anticipates that the Green Ribbon Committee will hold meetings over a period of approximately one year.
The Charleston County Green Ribbon Committee will consist of 15 members who must be residents of Charleston County and who must be qualified in one of the following categories:

One member must be qualified by experience or training in the field of energy management, preferably certified by the Association of Energy Engineers as a Certified Energy Manager, or be qualified by experience or training in the field of renewable energy systems.

One member must be qualified by experience or training in the field of transportation of solid waste.

One member must be qualified by experience or training in the field of solid waste management.

One member must be qualified by experience or training in the field of recycling.

One member must be qualified by experience or training in the field of real estate development.

One member must be qualified by experience or training in the environmental sciences.
-
One member must be a resident in the Bees Ferry corridor.
-
One member must be a resident within one-half mile of the current incinerator.

One member will be a municipal representative from a small municipality east of the Cooper River.

One member will be a municipal representative from a small municipality west of the Ashley River.
-
Two members will be at-large representatives of the community.

Three members will be appointed (one each) by the city of Charleston, the city of North Charleston and the town of Mount Pleasant.
