Public Input Needed – Planning for the Future of Highway 17 North

Public meetings will be held to gather input for a land use plan and overlay district for the Highway 17 North Corridor from Porchers Bluff Road to the Charleston County/Georgetown County boundary.

Charleston County Government, in coordination with the towns of Mount Pleasant, Awendaw and McClellanville, will hold three public meetings this month to begin the process of creating a land use plan and overlay district for the Highway 17 North Corridor, from Porchers Bluff Road to the Charleston County/Georgetown County boundary.

The process will involve extensive public participation. The public and representatives of all jurisdictions along Highway 17 North are encouraged to participate in shaping the future of this area of Charleston County.

The meetings in January will begin with a short overview of this planning process. After the presentation, attendees will break into small groups to identify their ideas for the future of the Highway 17 North Corridor.

The meetings will be held at the following locations:

  • Wednesday, Jan. 14, from 6 - 8 p.m.

Greater Zion AME Church, Fellowship Hall

4174 N. Highway 17
Awendaw, SC 29429

·         Thursday, Jan. 22, from 6- 8 p.m.

Lincoln High School Cafeteria

714 Lincoln Road
McClellanville, SC 29458

  • Wednesday, Jan. 28, from 6 – 8 p.m.

Town of Awendaw, Town Meeting Hall

6971 Doar Road
Awendaw, SC 29429

This planning process is a result of the work plan included in the Charleston County Comprehensive Plan, adopted by Charleston County Council on November 18, 2008.

The Charleston County Comprehensive Plan identifies the Highway 17 North Corridor as an area in need of a coordinated planning effort to ensure compatible land uses and access management. The goal of the planning process is to present the Planning Commissions and Councils of the impacted jurisdictions with coordinated recommendations regarding land uses and design and development standards for the Highway 17 North Corridor.
