Traffic Alert: New and Extended Work Announced for Johnnie Dodds Boulevard Improvements Project

Charleston County Government announces a new road closure on Rosemead Drive and a continuation of previously announced work on Bowman Road as part of the Johnnie Dodds Boulevard Improvements Project in Mount Pleasant.

  • A portion of Rosemead Drive will be closed on Thursday, May 10, beginning at midnight for approximately four and a half months.
  • The closure will take place at the Bowman Road intersection closest to McDonald’s.
  • The purpose of the closure is for construction workers to replace the Shem Creek Bridge.
  • Barricades and signs will be in place to alert motorists of the road closure.
  • The work will be done during the same timeframe as the Bowman Road closure and detour that is already in place.
  • All residents who live on Rosemead Drive will have access to the road at all times during the construction.

Due to poor weather, previously announced road work will continue so crews can finish painting the beams that support the Bowman Road overpass.

  • Road closure with a detour on Bowman Road at the Johnnie Dodds Boulevard intersection
    • Monday, May 7, from 9 p.m. - 6 a.m.
    • Drivers on Bowman Road will not be able to cross Johnnie Dodds Boulevard and will be detoured around this intersection. Drivers on Johnnie Dodds Boulevard will not be affected by the detour.
    • Barricades and signs will be used to direct drivers through the detour.
  • Lane shift on Bowman Road at the Johnnie Dodds Boulevard intersection as follows:
    • Tuesday, May 8 and Wednesday, May 9 from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.
    • Drivers on Bowman Road will still be able to cross Johnnie Dodds Boulevard, but the lanes will be reduced to one lane in each direction and shifted.
    • Barricades and signs will be used to direct drivers through the lane shift.

Drivers traveling through the project’s construction zone are asked to be aware of equipment and crews working in the area at all times. Alternative routes are recommended if possible. The public is also asked to notice traffic control signs, reductions in speed limit and message board information, and to note that all road work is dependent on the weather.

The goal of the project, which is expected to be completed in the spring of 2013, is to improve the traffic flow in and out of Mount Pleasant, especially before and after school and work hours. The project is funded by the Charleston County Transportation Sales Tax and managed by Charleston County Government’s RoadWise Program, in close coordination with the Town of Mount Pleasant and the S.C. Department of Transportation.

The public can get up-to-date project information, including construction status and traffic alerts, online at
