Functions
The S.C. Department of Social Services (DSS) is a state agency headquartered in Columbia, but with offices in Charleston County. DSS's mission is "to ensure that South Carolinians in need receive economic support, protective services and assistance in locating and obtaining child support from absent parents. DSS seeks to provide protective and other needed services to children and adults who cannot protect themselves and to provide job training and employment services to help South Carolinians who can work become self-sufficient."
The Department's services include the administration of the Family Independence welfare programs, the Food Stamp program through Electronic Benefits Transfer, Child Support Enforcement, Children, Family and Adult Services.
