Functions
The S.C. Department of Disabilities and Special Needs is a state agency headquartered in Columbia, but with a local advisory board located in Charleston County. The Disabilities Board was formed in 1958 to help men, women and children with mental retardation, spinal cord injuries, autism and other developmental disabilities. Services provided through the Board include residential care, center-based worksites, summer camps and transportation services.
Child development services are offered through the Charles Webb Children's Center, which promotes physical, social, emotional and cognitive development. The Adult Day Services offer training and employment programs focusing on the vocational and habilitation needs of adults. Family Support Services assist families in meeting the costs and other demands of caring for a relative in their own home, making specialized equipment, providing transportation, personal care aides and adult day care. Similarly, Respite Care provides temporary care to allow families the opportunity for a day or evening out, to take a vacation or to handle an emergency.
