History
The General Services Department was established in 1989 to centralize many County functions that were once performed by other departments, such as telephone service and copier repair, mail delivery, records storage and parking (Internal Services). The benefit of this centralized support service was a coordinated program that maximized resources and minimized duplication.
In October of 2002, the Facilities Management Department was created when the Internal Services Department functions of General Services was split off leaving the building maintenance function to stand alone. The Capital Projects Department was created in July of 1988 as a division of the Building Inspection Department. After Hurricane Hugo in 1990, it became its own independent department, and then merged with the Building Services Department in 1991.
Six years later, the two departments regained independent status. In May of 2009, the Capital Projects Department merged with the Facilities Management Department and is and is now called the Facilities Department. This department operates under the Assistant Administrator for General Services.
