Assistant Administrator for Transportation & Emergency Management

Functions

The Assistant Administrator for General Services provides internal support to County departments and agencies and serves as an assistant to the County Administrator by supervising the following departments or divisions: Emergency Management, Greenbelt, Public Works and Roadwise

History

The Transportation Half-Cent Sales Tax was approved by almost 60 percent of the voters in a county-wide referendum on November 2, 2004. It was implemented in Charleston County business establishments on May 1, 2005, and will continue for 25 years or until $1,303,360,000 is collected.

Fund distribution:

  • $1,081,788,800 for highways, bridges, roads, streets and mass transit systems (such as CARTA - Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority, and RTMA - Rural Transportation Management Authority). Charleston County RoadWise is the name of the Charleston County Government’s management program for the construction of roads, highways, resurfacing, paving and drainage projects that are funded by the Transportation Sales Tax.

  • $221,571,200 for the Greenbelt Program. The Charleston County Comprehensive Greenbelt Plan contains an Urban and Rural Grants Program to distribute the Greenbelt portion of the Transportation Sales Tax proceeds. The purpose of these grants is to implement the County’s Greenbelt Plan for the conservation of greenspace in Charleston County.
