In late 2001, Charleston County hired Alternative Resources Inc., a private consultant, to undertake a study of the Solid Waste Department's long-range facility and system needs.
The purpose of the study was to determine how the Solid Waste Department could best serve the citizens of the county through the year 2030. The consultant's plan is near completion.
One of the most important parts of the plan is determining how and where the county will dispose of over 400,000 tons of waste created each year by county businesses and residents.
The material below summarizes a first draft of a portion of the plan, focusing on waste disposal alternatives available to the county. The information was presented at the Aug. 8, 2002, County Council Solid Waste Committee Meeting.
