Charleston County’s 14th Annual Earth Day Festival
The purpose of Charleston County’s Annual Earth Day Festival is to educate Lowcountry residents about environmental issues in a celebratory atmosphere. The festival is a hands-on science-based interactive experience, designed to encourage participants of all ages to develop a deeper understanding of environmental issues. Earth Day was established in1970 and is now celebrated by a half-billion people around the world. We are doing our part locally by celebrating with families, students, and environmental partners. Our theme this year is “One Earth, One Future!”
It’s FUN. And it’s FREE! All festival activities and parking are free, except for food and beverages. Consider arriving by foot, bike, bus or carpool (www.ridetricountylink.com or www.ridecarta.com). Contact the Recycling Center at (843) 720-7111 for more information.

Highlights
We have many exciting events planned for Charleston County’s 2013 Earth Day Festival. Please click on each link below to learn more information.
Before you enter the festival....
Charleston, Dorchester and Berkeley County Lawn Mower Exchange
Residents of Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties are encouraged to bring in their old gas-powered mowers to North Charleston Riverfront Park at Noisette Blvd. and Turnbull Ave. between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The old gas mowers and gas-power yard tools can be traded in for vouchers on new cordless or corded electric mowers and air friendly yard tools available at discounted, event-only prices. Since the Tri-County event began in 2009, over 245 gasoline-powered mowers and yard tools have been recycled.
According to the EPA, a push mower emits as much hourly pollution as 11 cars and a riding mower emits as much as 34 cars. Visit DHEC’s website here for more information about the event.

Electronic Waste Drop-Off
It is important to recycle electronics rather than throwing them away because they often contain valuable resources such as precious metals (gold or silver), more common metals (aluminum and copper) and engineered plastics. Recycling electronics helps to recover the materials that, although valuable, can be harmful to the environment and to also conserve landfill space.
Charleston County residents are encouraged to drop off the following items in the parking lot before entering the Earth Day Festival. For a map of the drop off location, please visit the “Location” tab above.
- Home office equipment: CPUs,
monitors (color and b/w), laptops, hard drives, keyboards, mice, printers, copiers, scanners, fax machines, adding machines, calculators, telephones, cell and cordless phones, PDAs, pagers and shredders.
- Audio visual equipment: TVs, VCRs, stereos, radios, camcorders, CD players, DVD players and cassette players.
Goodwill Donation Center
Please bring your unwanted clothing and household items for donation to Goodwill. Goodwill’s mission is to help people achieve their full potential through the dignity and power of work! Goodwill serves their mission by providing job training and employment services to people with disabilities and other barriers to employment. Help keep material out of the landfill by recycling what you no longer use! The Goodwill donation center will be located in the main parking lot off of McMillan Ave. For a map of the drop off location, please visit the “Location” tab above.
Once you enter the festival...
Composting Awareness Center
Have you ever wondered how is compost made? Perhaps you are curious about the benefits of using finished compost? Make sure to visit the Compost Awareness Center, a focal point of the festival, featuring information about our local farm to table to compost movement.
Get up close and personal with organic waste and learn how it is turned into a valuable end product that brings revenue to our County! FREE compost samples will be available to take home with you for your garden!
The Great Cloth Diaper Change
Help put cloth diapers in the record books, come learn about cloth diapers, and help raise money for the Real Diaper Association! In 2012, 256 locations in 15 countries held SIMULTANEOUS events to break the world record for the most reusable cloth diapers changes simultaneously. That meant that some events (like in Malaysia) happened at 2am! In 2013, the Lowcounty’s local event will be held inside Riverfront Park in conjunction with Charleston County’s Earth Day Festival. In order to make this event a success and increase awareness of reusable cloth diapers, your participation is needed! If you plan on participating, please be sure to bring your own blanket—this record-breaking event will be happening on the grass in the meadow of Riverfront Park
Electric Car
A representative from Morris Nissan will be available to showcase the brand new Nissan Leaf as well as to answer any questions about electric cars.

Mad Science
Come enjoy the rush of conducting live scientific experiments at the Charleston County Earth Day Festival with local favorite Mad Science. Kids will enjoy the interactive nature of the activities and will be captivated when Mad Science performs an experiment live on stage!

Bird & Reptile Demonstration
Turtle & Tortoise Society of Charleston, Birds of Prey, Kiawah Island Nature Center, the Lowcountry Exotic Birds Society, and the Edisto Island Serpentarium will all be on hand to ensure an awesome and intuitive showcase of some of the environment’s most unique creatures.

Live Entertainment
Charleston County’s 2013 Earth Day Festival will include performances by members of the Blue Dogs, Professor Bottleneck and Harmonica Frank, and The Bluestone Ramblers! Additionally, there will be a live Zumba demonstration, an interactive storytelling session by Hawk Hurst, a recycled fashion show by Goodwill, and even more!

The Art Bus
This mobile studio will connect with individuals, organizations, and artists in the Lowcountry community to engage people through art in such a way that will bring joy, cultivate creativity, and serve those in need.

Art Walk
As a celebration of Earth Day, Charleston County hosts an annual Earth Day Art Contest to see whose artistic skills match the designated Earth Day Festival theme the best! The winner gets their image displayed on the back of EVERY official Earth Day t-shirt and will be recognized with an announcement and prizes during the kickoff of the event. This year’s theme is “One Earth, One Future.” You can find the official art contest rules here: Earth Day Art Contest Flyer 2013

Pet Helpers
Pet Helpers is a private, nonprofit 501(c)3 rescue and adoption center and low cost spay/neuter clinic that serves communities across the Lowcountry. Their mission is to end the euthanasia of all adoptable cats and dogs by sheltering our rescued animals until adopted; to provide low cost spay/neuter surgeries; to offer humane education programs; to pursue animal cruelty prosecution; and to invite animal welfare legislation. Representatives from Pet Helpers will be on hand with adoptable animals throughout the festival.
