Public Meeting on Proposed Improvements to Glenn McConnell Parkway/I-526 Interchange
Public meeting from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8, at West Ashley High School to discuss West Ashley Area road improvements.
Charleston County is holding a public meeting from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8, to gather input on proposed Transportation Sales Tax funded improvements located within the city of Charleston limits at the Glenn McConnell Parkway/ I-526 interchange.
The meeting will be held in the cafeteria of West Ashley High School (4060 Wildcat Blvd.; Charleston, SC 29414).
Funding for the Glenn McConnell Parkway/ I-526 interchange project was approved by Charleston County voters during the second Transportation Sales Tax Bond Referendum in November of 2006.
Those attending the meeting will have an opportunity to make comments, ask questions and review conceptual designs for improvements to traffic flow.
Details on the proposed project:
The project extends along Glenn McConnell Parkway eastward to the Orleans Road intersection and westward beyond Charlie Hall Boulevard (toward Wildcat Road). The project is proposed to extend the double left-turn lanes from Glenn McConnell Parkway onto the eastbound I-526 entrance ramp.
Project designers have evaluated potential improvements to the I-526 eastbound entrance ramp. The proposal will extend the two acceleration lanes on I-526, which currently receive vehicles turning left onto I-526 from Glenn McConnell Parkway, and include an appropriate merge distance for traffic merging onto I-526.
The project will include intersection improvements at the Glenn McConnell Parkway and Magwood Drive intersection.
The project will include bike lanes and pedestrian facilities.
The initial Charleston County Transportation Sales Tax referendum was approved by voters in November of 2004. Collection of the Transportation Sales Tax began in May of 2005 and will continue for 25 years or until $1.303 billion is generated for transportation and greenspace related projects and improvements.
Charleston County RoadWise is the name of the Charleston County Government’s management program for the construction of roads, highways, resurfacing, paving and drainage projects that are funded by the Transportation Sales Tax.
