Proof of Residency

Proof of Residency

All voters in Charleston County Elections must show one of these:
  • Voter Registration Card
  • South Carolina Drivers' License
  • South Carolina Identification Card

Voters who registered to vote by mail since November 2002 must show proof of identification and residency, by presenting a:

  • current and valid photo identification
(S.C. Drivers License or S.C. Identification Card)
  • current utility bill
  • current bank statement
  • current government check
  • current paycheck
  • current government document other than your Voter Registration Card

Voters can return with the proper identification or, if they do not have the proper ID, they can choose to vote a provisional (challenged) ballot.

This new requirement is mandated under the 2002 Help America Vote Act (HAVA).
