The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) is a state agency headquartered in Columbia, but with offices in Charleston County. DHEC's mission, "To promote and protect the health of the public and the environment," is supported by the following services: maintenance of birth and death records, health clinic services, public health policy regulation, enforcement of federal and state environmental laws and regulations, the issuing of permits, licenses and certifications for activities which may affect the environment (i.e. septic tank permits), and protection of South Carolina's coastal resources and promotion of responsible development.
