Functions
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is a federal agency with state offices headquartered in Columbia and three related agencies in Charleston County. HUD awards grants to local Public Housing Agencies to help finance the development (i.e., the construction, rehabilitation or acquisition) of housing to be used as "Public Housing."
With offices serving the County of Charleston and the cities of Charleston and North Charleston, the Housing Authorities receive federal funding to assist residents with housing costs, requiring residents to meet specific income guidelines.
More information about the S.C. Department of Housing and Urban Development can be found on their Web Site at: http://www.hud.gov/local/col/index.html
