Purchasing Recycled Paint

At the convenience center, you can view a catalog of the colors available at that given time. Most of the colors include tan, blue, yellow, green, brown, mauve, gray, white and off-white. A site attendant will assist you in picking out your color and organizing the five-gallon buckets of the paint you chose.

The paint costs $4 per five-gallon bucket, and must be paid for at the Scale House located at the entrance of the landfill. Once you have your purchase receipt from the scale house, you can pick up your paint from the site attendant at the convenience center.

How Paint is Recycled

PaintThe paint that Charleston County residents bring to one of the eight convenience centers located throughout the County is all mixed together at the Bees Ferry Landfill Convenience Center. The colors are first separated in the latex processing shed. When paint is being made, all of the same color paint is poured into a 55-gallon drum. When the drum is full with the same color, the paint is blended with a mixer. After an hour of mixing, the paint is poured into 11 five-gallon buckets. The top of the lid is coded with a date of when it was made and a swatch color. A swatch color also goes in the paint color catalog for people to choose from.

Oil-based paints are not mixed into the latex paint, and most of the paint sold has a flat finish. Any empty cans and lids not reused are put in the recycling container for metal recycling.
