Schedule Revised for Proposed Zoning Text Changes that Affect Solid Waste Disposal Facilities and Other Uses

Commission voted to approve the amendments, but also to reconsider the issue on Monday, July 13, 2009

At its 3 p.m. meeting on Wednesday, June 24, the Charleston County Planning Commission addressed proposed text changes to the Charleston County Zoning and Land Development Regulations Ordinance. The Commission voted five to two to approve the changes, but also voted six to one to reconsider the issue at its next regular meeting at 4 p.m. on Monday, July 13, in order to have more time to review the information.

Charleston County Council will still hold a public hearing on Thursday, July 16 at 5:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at the Lonnie Hamilton, III, Public Services Building (4045 Bridge View Drive; N. Charleston, 29405) about the proposed text changes to the Charleston County Zoning and Land Development Regulations Ordinance.

If eventually adopted by County Council, the ordinance would implement the recently updated Charleston County Comprehensive Plan to clarify that the existing solid waste disposal facilities, and other unrelated commercial and industrial uses previously established before April 21, 1999, do not require a Special Exception from the Board of Zoning Appeals if a change or expansion occurs within the existing boundary of the facilities' property and they meet all other zoning requirements.

Charleston County Council's Planning and Public Works Committee will meet at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 16 following the public hearing. Immediately following the committee meeting on the 16th, Charleston County Council will hold a special council meeting in order to conduct the first reading of the ordinance for the proposed zoning changes.

The upcoming meetings are listed below, and are open to the public:
