Charleston County Emergency Management Launches App for Critical Information
Free, real-time data delivered straight to your smartphone in emergency situations

Charleston County Government is constantly seeking additional ways to keep the public informed before, during and after an emergency situation. The Emergency Management Department (EMD) has developed an app to do just that. The app is now available for free on all Apple and Android devices. While the app was designed with hurricane season in mind, the operation will be a valuable tool for any natural or man-made disaster.

Charleston County EMD AppFunctions of the new EMD app:

  • Emergency information
  • Shelter locations
  • Neighborhood distribution points
  • Special event information
  • Closings
  • Daily weather
  • Family emergency plans
  • Contact numbers

Technology can be expensive, but Charleston County applied for and received a federal grant to cover the entire cost of production. The grant will also provide funding for yearly maintenance costs of the app.

"Technology has made the flow of information much more efficient in an emergency situation," said Cathy Haynes, County EMD's Chief of Operations. "More and more, our citizens are relying on their smartphones, so it only makes sense to develop this application and enhance our ability to communicate directly with our citizens."

To get the app: Go to whichever online app store is appropriate for your phone -- Google Play for Android or Apple for iPhones. In the Search field type CC EMD; if it doesn’t work type CCEMD without the space.

To see an overview of the app's features, watch the short tutorial developed by Charleston County:
