Charleston County Council Hires New Administrator

At a regular meeting on December 11, 2008, Charleston County Council voted to hire Allen O’Neal as the new Administrator for Charleston County Government.

O’Neal’s first official day as the Charleston County Administrator was Tuesday, Jan. 20.

“It is a great honor to have been selected as the County Administrator,” O’Neal said. “I’m ready to get down to business in Charleston County and am excited to get to know the County employees and our citizens,” he said.

O’Neal had the opportunity to spend a week transitioning with the outgoing County Administrator, Mack Canterbury, who retired.

O’Neal was born and raised in North Carolina, and graduated from the University of North Carolina (UNC), Chapel Hill. He majored in political science with an emphasis on public administration.

In total, O’Neal has over 30 years experience in local government management.

Most recently, he was the City Manager for Newport, Ore. He has participated in numerous hurricane responses, having served 15 and one-half years as the County Manager for New Hanover County, N.C., which has a population of 185,000. Prior to working for New Hanover County, O’Neal served as the Assistant County Manager in Cumberland County, N.C., which has a population of 330,000.
