Recycling Encouraged During Southeastern Wildlife Exposition

Marion Square in downtown Charleston is one of the most heavily trafficked areas during the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE), which will be held February 13 through 15. The event has teamed up with the Charleston County Government’s Solid Waste and Recycling Department to provide participants with recycling opportunities and services.

The following recycling opportunities will be available at the SEWE:

  • Approximately 10 recycling bins will be available throughout Marion Square to accept plastic bottles (#1 and #2), aluminum cans, steel cans and glass bottles.

  • Recycling bins and trash cans will be located together throughout the square. Volunteers will be stationed at each set of containers to direct people to throw their trash and recycling items in the correct receptacle.

  • Corrugated cardboard recycling dropsites will also be available for vendors at Marion Square and at the Gaillard Municipal Auditorium locations. Charleston County Recycling is expecting high volumes of cardboard from this event.

  • A recycling dropsite will also be located at Marion Square; this will be used by the volunteers to empty the full recycling bins at the end of each day throughout the event.

Charleston County Government encourages patrons to participate and cooperate in the effort to recycle as much as possible.

“We are excited to have recycling containers available during the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, and we especially want to encourage everyone at the Marion Square location to recycle,” said Theresa Martin, Charleston County Solid Waste and Recycling Marketing Specialist. ”However, we also want to remind everyone to not throw items that the County’s Recycling Department does not accept in the recycling bins, such as plastic cups.”

SEWE organizers are excited to make such a big effort to recycle as much as possible at the event.

“At Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, we pride ourselves on promoting conservation efforts as one of our top priorities,” said Ashley Slane, SEWE Marketing Director. “This year, we would like to thank Charleston County Government, the Charleston Green Fair and The Green Committee with the city of Charleston for their help with our recycling efforts, and we hope our attendees will make recycling a part of their daily routine if it isn't already.”

Citizens who would like to volunteer to help with SEWE's recycling efforts in Marion Square can visit www.HandsOnCharleston.orgg and click on “Project Calendar,” then “Browse Projects.”
