Highway 162 Improvements at Stono Ferry Subdivision Now Complete

New left-turn lane allows for safer traffic flow past subdivision

Charleston County Government has completed the addition of a new left-turn lane on Highway SC 162 at the entrance of the Stono Ferry subdivision.

Previously, motorists traveling south on Highway SC 162 from US Highway 17 toward the town of Hollywood had to stop behind vehicles trying to turn left into the subdivision, creating an unsafe and inconvenient situation.

The improvement project, which was funded by the Transportation Sales Tax, has widened SC 162 from two to three lanes to allow for the creation of a left-turn lane into the Stono Ferry subdivision.

“By widening SC 162 and creating a left-turn turn lane, motorists can now safely continue straight on SC 162 past vehicles turning left into the subdivision,” Kurt Taylor, Charleston County Deputy Administrator who oversees the Transportation Sales Tax Programs, said.

The project, which was requested by the town of Hollywood, took five months to construct and cost approximately $610,000 including design, right-of-way acquisition and construction. The 1,700 foot-long project also improved the road’s drainage by replacing open ditches along the roadside with curbs and gutters leading to drainage pipes.

The Charleston County Transportation Sales Tax referendum was approved by voters in November of 2004. Collection of the Transportation Sales Tax began in May 2005 and will continue for 25 years or until $1.303 billion is generated for transportation and greenspace related projects and improvements.

Charleston County RoadWise is the name of the Charleston County Government’s management program for the construction of roads, highways, resurfacing, paving and drainage projects that are funded by the Transportation Sales Tax.
