Volunteers Needed for Piccolo Spoleto Finale Recycling Effort Last year, 280 pounds of recyclables were collected at the finale
Charleston County’s Environmental Management Department (formerly Solid Waste and Recycling Department) and the City of Charleston’s Green Committee have joined together in an effort to recycle as much as possible during the Piccolo Spoleto Finale. The event will take place Saturday, June 6, in Hampton Park (30 Mary Murray Blvd., downtown Charleston) from 4 to 9 p.m.
Volunteers are needed to help manage the recycling effort by encouraging attendees to recycle bottles and cans and making sure that recyclable materials are separated and put into the correct bins.
“This is an important effort,” says Dan Dickison, who helped to coordinate the inaugural recycling initiative at the Piccolo Spoleto Finale last year and is also coordinating this year’s effort. “We’d like for this event to become a fully sustainable undertaking and ultimately serve as a model for other events in this region. Because such a broad spectrum of people from the community attends the finale, it also presents a great opportunity to educate the public about the importance of recycling, as well as the details about what can and can’t be recycled in Charleston County.”
According to Dickison, the recycling initiative at the 2008 finale went well. The effort kept 280 pounds of recyclable materials from going to the Bees Ferry Landfill. Dickison said he is hoping that that 2009 effort will be easier because recycling at events in Charleston is becoming more and more common.
Charleston County’s Environmental Management Department will provide the recycling bins for the finale. There will be 10 to 15 stations around the finale site at Hampton Park, and each station will have one trash can and one recycling bin placed together. Piccolo Spoleto Finale attendees will be encouraged to use the recycling bins for their empty plastic bottles (only #1 and #2 plastic), aluminum cans and glass bottles.
