Traffic Alert: Nighttime Road Closure and Detour for Johnnie Dodds Improvement Project January 8-12

Charleston County Government announces a new traffic alert for the Johnnie Dodds Boulevard Improvements Project in Mount Pleasant.

Nighttime road closure on South Shellmore Boulevard between Johnnie Dodds Boulevard and East Frontage Road:

  • A nighttime road closure will occur between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 8 through Thursday, Jan. 12 for drainage work on South Shellmore Boulevard (by Firestone).

  • The road closure will also affect Johnnie Dodds Boulevard (U.S. Highway 17) and a small portion of East Frontage Road.

  • During this construction, turning lanes off Johnnie Dodds Boulevard will be closed in both directions.

  • Drivers will not be able to cross Johnnie Dodds Boulevard at the intersection, and will be directed through a detour with barricades and signs.

  • The purpose of the detour is for safety reasons, so crews can install drainage pipes.

  • Drivers choosing to use Johnnie Dodds Boulevard during the evenings from January 8-12 are encouraged to drive with extra caution.

  • If the weather is poor, the work will continue on the next weather-permitting night.

Drivers traveling through the project’s construction zone are asked to be aware of equipment and crews working in the area at all times. Alternative routes are recommended if possible. The public is also asked to notice traffic control signs, reductions in speed limit and message board information, and to note that all road work is dependent on the weather.

The goal of the project, which is expected to be completed in the spring of 2013, is to improve the traffic flow in and out of Mount Pleasant, especially before and after school and work hours. The project is funded by the Charleston County Transportation Sales Tax and managed by Charleston County Government’s RoadWise Program, in close coordination with the Town of Mount Pleasant and the S.C. Department of Transportation.
