Road Work Delayed Due to Weather: Lane Closures on Maybank Highway Now Will Occur Next Weekend to Install Drainage Pipe

Date for weekend lane closures on Maybank Highway at Old Folly Road has been changed from August 28 to September 11 due to weather delays

Due to poor weather, road work that was expected to occur Aug. 28 – 30 has been delayed. The work is now expected to begin Friday, Sept. 11 at 9 p.m. and extend through the weekend until 5:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 14

During that weekend, crews will begin working to install a new 60-inch drainage pipe under Maybank Highway at Old Folly Road as part of the Folly Road and Maybank Highway Intersection Improvement Project.

Because crews will be working in the roadway, there will be temporary lane closures on Maybank Highway. At no time will the entire roadway be blocked in either direction.

Old Folly Road will be closed to traffic coming from James Island heading toward Johns Island. Drivers going to Johns Island via Maybank Highway will need to continue on Folly Road to the intersection at Maybank Highway. A law enforcement officer will be on site at this intersection to direct traffic and allow drivers to turn left from Folly Road onto Maybank Highway and continue toward Johns Island.

The work is a part of larger improvements for the area and every effort is being made to minimize disruptions to the traveling public.

Citizens are asked to take notice of traffic control signs and message board information, and to note that all road work is dependent on the weather.

As other road work on the project arises that could disrupt traffic, notifications will be announced through news releases issued to local media and posted on both the Charleston County Government and Charleston County RoadWise Web sites.

The intersection improvements for Folly Road and Maybank Highway, expected to be completed by the spring of 2010, are funded by the Transportation Half-Cent Sales Tax and managed by the Charleston County RoadWise Program.

When completed, the Folly Road and Maybank Highway intersection improvements will include:
