<p><strong class="content">Project Impact Offers Mini-Grant for Teachers to Educate Students on Lowcountry Hazards<br/>
</strong><em class="content">$1,000 in grants available to Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester County elementary and middle schools</em></p>
<p><a href="http://www.charlestoncounty.org/"></a><span class="content">The Charleston County area</span> <a class="content" href="http://www.charlestoncounty.org/Departments/BuildingServices/ProjectImpact.htm">S.C. Project Impact Initiative</a> <span class="content">is offering a mini-grant program to Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester County elementary and middle schools.</span></p>
<p class="content">Grants will be given to schools that develop programs using art, music, theatre, or hands-on activities to educate students about the types of hazardous events that could impact the Lowcountry, and ways to minimize losses associated with these types of events.</p>
<p class="content">Grant funding is also available for projects that educate students about environmental awareness and protection. The funding may be used for supplies or materials needed for these types of projects.</p>
<p class="content">There is a total of $1,000 available for local schools, and the funding will be distributed to selected applicants in sums of no more than $500 each. The mini-grant program is funded by Project Impact, which is an ongoing initiative originally sponsored by FEMA to assist local communities in becoming more disaster resistant.</p>
<p class="content">Project Impact committees will review the applications that are received and will select the winners.&#160;</p>

<li class="content">The application deadline is 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009</li>
<li class="content">The award notification will occur on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009</li>
