Calhoun Street to be Resurfaced Through Transportation "Half-Cent" Sales Tax Funds

Transportation "Half-Cent" Sales Tax projects have worked their way to downtown Charleston. Calhoun Street, a major route in the heart of Charleston's business and historic district, will be resurfaced soon.

Calhoun Street will be resurfaced from Courtenay Drive to East Bay Street.

The work will begin on the evening of June 11 and is expected to be completed before June 23.

Brief delays in traffic flow will likely occur, and parking on Calhoun Street will not be allowed during the late evening and early morning hours during the resurfacing project. However, in order to minimize delays, work will be done between 7 p.m. - 5 a.m.

From June 11- 14, workers will resurface Calhoun Street between Courtenay Drive and Coming Street, and the next segment of the work will begin on the evening of June 17 between Coming and East Bay Streets. The project is expected to be completed before June 23.

Parking on Calhoun Street during the resurfacing hours will be strictly prohibited according to city of Charleston officials. However, two of Calhoun Street's four lanes will remain open at all times, allowing continued flow of traffic in the area. There may be a very short delay at intersections along Calhoun Street when asphalt personnel and machinery reach those points.

Charleston County RoadWise signs will be strategically placed along Calhoun Street throughout the project area so citizens will be reminded of the work that is taking place. The public will also be notified 72 hours in advance of lane closures and parking restrictions along Calhoun Street.

Charleston County's Transportation Sales Tax was approved by voters in November of 2004. Collection of the tax began two years ago in May of 2005. The tax will continue for 25 years or until $1.303 billion is generated for transportation and greenspace related projects and improvements.

The program management and construction services for road improvements is called "Charleston County RoadWise." The name of the program and team created to manage and implement transportation improvements funded by the Transportation Sales Tax is an extension of Charleston County Government staff.
