2010 Charleston County Citizens’ Academy

The Charleston County Citizens’ Academy provides an opportunity for area residents to learn about Charleston County Government. These seasonal classes cover services and operations of county government, how they are paid for and by whom, and what issues drive decisions on whether or how to provide them. Informed citizens will foster stronger working relationships between government and the community it serves.

The Academy is offered in a very flexible format allowing citizens to choose the topics, dates, and times that are most convenient for them. Morning and afternoon sessions will be offered each quarter and citizens are encouraged to select from those topics that are offered. There is no commitment required to attend every session and there is no fee to attend any of the 8 sessions.

Sessions will be taught by elected officials and county staff. Classes will be held in several county facilities, including the Lonnie Hamilton Public Services Building and Trident One Stop Career Center in North Charleston, and the Charleston County Main Library and Judicial Center Complex in downtown Charleston. Some classes may include tours, such as the Library and Detention Center.

Topics include the county budgeting process, garbage and recycling, law enforcement, the court system, emergency services, planning, and zoning, and much more. Click here for a schedule of classes and an overview of each session.
