Mission of Prevention Services
The mission of Charleston Center Prevention and Education Services Department is to reduce the harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco, other drug abuse, violence and other high-risk behaviors through the identification of factors which place individuals at increased risk and the implementation of prevention, education and referral services for the residents of Charleston County.

Prevention Resource Center
Located on the first floor of Charleston Center, the Prevention Resource Center has a wide variety of books, tapes, videos and DVD’s providing information on topics such as:

Merchant Education
The Prevention Department provides courses designed to help educate vendors about their legal requirements and their responsibilities regarding selling alcohol and tobacco to minors.
These programs also help bartenders develop skills required to understand when a patron has had too much to drink and how to effectively set limits when serving alcohol.

Prevention Programs
in the Schools
Charleston Center’s Prevention Department believes that the greatest impact on the alcoholism and drug addiction problem in America can be achieved by helping young people to learn about the dangers of addiction and to explore healthy lifestyles.
To do so, Charleston Center provides a variety of evidence-based prevention programs in Charleston County schools.
Charleston Center also provides education and prevention information at health fairs and other public forums.
