College of Charleston Poll Worker Recruitment Partnership
In 2024, the Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections (BVRE) was awarded a $76,000 grant from the U.S. Election Assistance Commission to develop a course with the College of Charleston aimed at recruiting college students to serve as poll workers.
The resulting Special Interest course, created in partnership with BVRE, centered on civic engagement. A core requirement was that enrolled students serve as poll workers for the 2024 General Election. This innovative initiative not only gave students the opportunity to play a vital role in their community on Election Day, but also equipped them with valuable, lifelong skills.
Building on this success, BVRE is continuing to explore new ways to involve college poll workers in 2025. Plans include hosting several poll worker training sessions on the College of Charleston campus this fall, and partnering with student organizations and campus groups to inspire the next generation of poll workers.
