Born and raised in Charleston, Mary grew up with a desire to serve her community. She attended Ashley River Creative Arts, Buist Academy and finally Ashley Hall before matriculating on to Rhodes College in Memphis, TN. There, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Spanish in 2002. Mary lived in Washington, DC for a number of years, immersing herself in art and politics before returning to the south to attend Auburn University where she received a Master in Business Administration in 2009. While at Auburn, Mary served as the President of the Graduate Business School, was named a Who’s Who Among American Colleges and Universities and won the sole award given to a graduate business student by her peers based on leadership.

Shortly after returning home, Mary managed her father's 2012 South Carolina Senate race and remained closely involved in local politics before deciding to run for office herself in 2014. Mary served for two years in the South Carolina House of Representatives, representing parts of Charleston and Dorchester counties.

In November 2016, Mary ran for Charleston County Treasurer and won, becoming the first female treasurer that the county has elected. Her win was also the second time that Mary was the only Democratic pick-up statewide. Mary set out to make sure her office worked for the Charleston County taxpayers. Since being sworn in on July 1, 2017, she has implemented the Advance Tax Installment Plan, successfully advocated for tax law changes in Columbia, grown an outreach program, begun to issue motor vehicle decals and registrations from her office and has added new ways to pay—including credit cards at the counter, e-checks online (no fee), and over-the-phone payments (bilingual service). She is serving in her second term as County Treasurer.

In addition to leading her office, Mary serves as the President of the South Carolina Association of Auditors, Treasurers and Tax Collectors. She sits on the Board for the National Association of County Collectors, Treasurers and Finance Officers, as well as on the Boards for the National Association of Counties and Society 1858 of the Gibbes Museum of Art. She recognizes the incredible responsibility that the Charleston County taxpayers have entrusted her with and is honored to provide a strong voice at both the state and national levels.

When not working or volunteering, Mary can be found trying new foods, reading (a current favorite is James Harriot’s series All Creatures Great and Small) enjoying time spent walking Charles Towne Landing and, most importantly, raising a curious, adaptable, and loving daughter with her husband, Tad, and two dogs, Cornbread and Maple.
