July 20, 2019, will mark the 50th anniversary of the landing of Apollo 11 on the surface of the moon. To celebrate Neil Armstrong’s “one small step” and prepare students for “giant leap for mankind,” NASA Space Grant is sponsoring the Apollo Student Challenge (ASC). The nationwide event provides an opportunity for middle school students to celebrate the landing through an engaging hands-on challenge. Student teams will build a replica of an Apollo Lunar Module that will be flown and landed onto a high resolution map of the actual Apollo11 landing site by an Un-crewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV), or drone. Once landed, the students will place a Lunar Rover at their landing site and apply on-the-spot programming changes to deliver their team built payload. Student teams may configure the rover to look like an astronaut and develop a creative and meaningful payload. The statewide challenge will be held in July. Teams must register by April 15.
