2025 Summer Youth Internship

Thank you for your interest in our internship program. We have received an overwhelming number of applications and are no longer accepting new submissions at this time.

  • Please note: Applications are accepted through the deadline or until we reach the maximum number of students we are able to place, whichever comes first.

Applications open on March 7th 2025 and close on May 2nd 2025

The Summer Youth Internship Program (SYIP) provides young adults who reside in Charleston County an opportunity to develop workplace readiness skills, exposure to the work world, and gain experience in the operations of county government. The Summer Youth will be paid $15.00 per hour.

Eligible individuals must:

Summer Youth Internship Program
  • Be between the ages of 16 - 21 at the program start.
  • Currently enrolled in high school or college.
  • Resident of Charleston County.
  • Complete an Online Application. Incomplete applications will not be processed.
  • Have an active email account and respond to email communication after submitting the application.
  • Have an active voicemail and respond promptly to voice mail messages.
  • Please see the Age Certification Form. ( For students under the age of eighteen(18), a Parent or Guardian must sign this form. All others must sign the form themselves.)

Job Opportunities are offered with:

  • Charleston County Government, primarily at the Public Services Building in North Charleston.
  • The Public Library at one of the branches within Charleston County.
  • The Charleston Animal Society at its facility in North Charleston. (Must be 18 or over)
  • Public Works Department (Must be 18 or over)

Program Duration / Hours:

  • Start Date - June 13th
  • Work begins with the designated department June 16th - July 24th.
  • Additional soft skills trainings provided throughout the program
  • Graduation - July 24th
  • A total of 120 hours will be worked, with an average of 4-hour shifts per day Depending on the department needs and the student's schedule.

  • May 2nd, 2025 at 11:59 PM or 125 applicants, whichever comes first.

Please Note:

  • Applying for these jobs does not guarantee you will be selected. We typically have more applicants than we have jobs available.
  • All students selected for employment must email an Age Certification Form before starting work. For students under the age of eighteen (18), a PARENT OR GUARDIAN MUST SIGN THIS FORM. All others must sign the form themselves.
  • Eligible individuals must be between the ages of 16 - 21 at the program start.

Summer Youth Internship Program Selection Timeline:

Application Period:

  • March 7th, 2025: Application window opens.
  • May 2nd, 2025, 11:59 PM: Application deadline. Late submissions will not be considered.

Virtual Interview Phase:

  • Late April to early May 2025: Selected candidates will be contacted via email to participate in virtual interviews.
  • Second to third week of May 2025: Notifications expected to be dispatched to eligible candidates regarding virtual interview invitations.

Acceptance Letters:

  • Second to third week of May 2025: Acceptance letters will be issued to successful candidates.
  • Acceptance letters will contain placement details and any additional instructions for the program.

New Hire Emails:

  • Upon acceptance into the program: Successful candidates will receive new hire emails.
  • New hire emails will provide detailed instructions on paperwork completion, onboarding procedures, and other administrative tasks.

Correspondence:

  • Throughout the program duration: Ongoing correspondence will be maintained to provide updates, reminders, and relevant information.
  • Regular communication channels, such as email or designated online platforms, will be utilized to address queries or concerns.

Professional Development:

  • Throughout the program duration: Interns will have access to professional development opportunities.
  • Workshops, seminars, or training sessions may cover various aspects of personal and professional growth, including communication skills, time management, and career planning.

Orientation on Start Day:

  • Program start date: Interns will participate in an orientation session.
  • The orientation will provide an overview of program objectives, departmental assignments, and guidelines for successful participation.
  • Interns will have the opportunity to meet program coordinators, mentors, and fellow participants during the orientation session.
