The preliminary design process started on October 29, 2013, and is currently underway. During this phase of the project, engineers, surveyors, scientists and other specialists are gathering data, conducting surveys and analyzing project information. This will enable the project team to evaluate alternative traffic measures, assess potential improvement opportunities and identify project impacts for permitting. Information collected will include: traffic data, location of roadway features, area topography, existing structures and utilities, environmental resources, wetlands, and storm drainage features. The surveys will also facilitate roadway design and future construction plans.

Project Description:

The Airport Connector Road Project (Project) was initiated by Charleston County Government to provide an improved quality of life for citizens through better traffic operations and to enhance the economic development competitiveness for business in the Charleston region.

The Project will provide a new direct access road to Charleston International Airport and should relieve traffic congestion by providing a new connection from Dorchester Road to Montague Avenue near the Mark Clark Expressway (I-526).

The initial concept is to build over 3 miles of a new, four-lane road, which will provide locals and visitors with a new route to the airport.

Public Meetings:

Charleston County Government will host a community meeting to discuss the proposed infrastructure project for the Airport Connector Road.  This will be a Public Introduction meeting, which will present early planning information and goals of the project and offer opportunities for questions and comments. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 4, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Goodwin Elementary School, located at 5501 Dorchester Road in North Charleston.

Persons with disabilities who may require special accommodations at the March 4th meeting should contact Richard Turner with Charleston County’s Transportation Development Department at (843) 202-6155.

Throughout the planning process, a series of public meetings will be held to solicit input from the project stakeholders. Please check back in the future as public meeting notices will be posted here. Future public meetings will also be announced to the media in advance once they are determined.
