SURVEY ENDS: 10/31/22
The Charleston region's affordable housing problem is no secret—it has long been a pressing issue affecting the community's wellbeing, and there has been a lot of important work to study the issue and identify possible strategies.
For the first time, Charleston County is creating a comprehensive housing plan to guide its approach to the issue. Housing Our Future is that comprehensive action plan—it will define the need, identify the strategies, and chart a sustainable course for its work on this issue. The County is not looking for "feel-good fixes" to the issue, but rather the strategies that will create sustainable, long-term change.
This Charleston County Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) for affordable housing gap financing has been released. Funding is available to for-profit and non-profit Applicants proposing the development of affordable rental and for-sale housing. Funding for this NOFA is provided by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA).
The application will open online on October 27, 2022.
The deadline for submission is November 11, 2022.
Individual awards are limited to $2,000,000.00 per project.
Charleston County's Department of Housing and Neighborhood Revitalization is now accepting public comments on the County's draft comprehensive housing plan. The plan can be found at Housing Our Future homepage.
The Housing our Future plan is Charleston County's first comprehensive plan for housing attainability. The plan includes months of research, analysis, and community conversations focused on capacity building, housing creation and preservation, housing stability, and homeownership. It also provides a clear understanding of the needs and challenges facing Charleston County. The plan provides a set of policies, programs, and capacity-building measures designed to help meet housing needs for years to come.
"We are excited for the public to see the draft housing plan," said Acting Director of Housing and Neighborhood Revitalization Amanda Ramage. "While this is a county-wide strategy and a guide for Charleston County Council, every community in the County has its own unique needs, so we encourage everyone to get involved and provide feedback."
The Housing and Neighborhood Revitalization Department will also host several community meetings where the public can view the plan and provide comments in person. The deadline to submit comments online is March 1, 2023. Please select this link to view the in-person meeting schedules. I have attached the in-person schedule.
